The 2026 Reality
Is Data Science Still Worth It in 2026?
Yes, but not the way most course pages in Kerala still describe it. Data science has not disappeared; it has split. Routine work such as boilerplate exploratory analysis, SQL drafting and model documentation is increasingly done by AI tools. What employers still pay for is judgment: framing the problem, building a model that works, and shipping it inside a real product (Towards Data Science).
For freshers that has three practical consequences:
- The generalist middle is squeezed. A notebook full of Pandas and scikit-learn is now the baseline, not the differentiator. Entry-level roles increasingly blend analysis with engineering.
- The baseline stack is Python, SQL and a way to visualise data. Most freshers still enter through analyst-style roles, so these fundamentals must be solid.
- The pay and momentum are shifting toward people who build AI systems. Salary guides put fresher data scientist pay at roughly ₹6 to 10 LPA and AI or ML engineer roles at roughly ₹8 to 14 LPA (Instahyre). These are directional figures from salary-guide sources, not guarantees.
That is why we do not teach data science as an isolated subject. A data scientist who can also build the API, the interface and the LLM layer around a model can take a project from idea to deployment alone, which is exactly what small Kerala teams and Technopark product companies need.
