What does a forward deployed engineer do?
An FDE takes a product, usually a platform or an AI system, and makes it work inside one customer's real environment. That means the customer's data, their legacy systems, their security rules and their people. The work covers four things:
Discovery
Working out which problem actually matters, often from an ambiguous brief.
Building
Integrations, data pipelines, workflows, and for AI products, LLM and retrieval (RAG) systems with prompts, guardrails and evaluation.
Deploying and operating
Shipping to production, monitoring it, and fixing it when it breaks. That ownership is what sets an FDE apart from a pre-sale role.
Feeding the product back
When the same custom fix keeps appearing across customers, the FDE flags it so the core team can build it properly into the product.
A typical week blends embedded build time at the customer, demos and requirement calls, production firefighting, and handing recurring problems to the product team. One guide puts the split at roughly 75% technical work, 15% solution design and 10% relationship management. Treat that as an illustration, since the mix changes by employer.
What is an AI forward deployed engineer?
Most FDE jobs posted since 2025 are AI roles: deploying LLMs, retrieval (RAG) systems and agents into a customer's workflows, with evaluation, guardrails and monitoring. Titles you will see for the same work include AI forward deployed engineer, forward deployed AI engineer, applied AI engineer and, at Anthropic, frontier deployed engineer.
Where the role came from
Palantir already uses the forward deployed engineer title for its staff.
Palantir reportedly had more of these "Deltas" than regular software engineers.
OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Cloud and many AI startups copy the model as deploying AI becomes the bottleneck.
Palantir is credited with the role, and the name borrows from the military idea of a soldier stationed close to the action. Its own job posts call the forward deployed software engineer the blueprint for the role.
The title spread as AI companies found that model quality alone did not get products live inside large organisations.
Why demand is surging
AWS: $1 billion
AWS announced a $1 billion investment in a dedicated FDE organisation in June 2026.
Anthropic: $100 million
Committed on 2 October 2026 to its Claude Frontier Academy, which aims to train 10,000 "frontier deployed engineers" by the end of 2027 through nominated, employer-sponsored cohorts.
A fair counterpoint
Andreessen Horowitz has called the title "title arbitrage", a relabelling of older solutions and integration engineer jobs, and McKinsey has said it may be a buzzword for a service consulting firms already offered. Some postings titled FDE are closer to solutions or support work. The demand is real; the title is not always.
Forward deployed engineer vs software engineer, solutions engineer and solutions architect
The core difference is who owns the system once it is live. Sources agree that a solutions architect designs and an FDE builds and runs, and that an AI engineer optimises the model while an FDE optimises the customer outcome.
| Role | Focus | When they engage | Accountable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forward deployed engineer | One customer, many capabilities | After the sale, often before go-live too | The system running in that customer's production |
| Software engineer | One product, many customers | Throughout the product life | Features shipping to everyone |
| Solutions architect | Designing the overall plan | Usually before or around the sale | The architecture, not the production code |
| AI / ML engineer | The model or platform inside the employer | Throughout the product life | Model quality and core AI features |
| Solutions engineer | Portfolio of prospects | During the sales cycle | Proving the product can fit |
| Implementation / customer success | Configuration and adoption | After the sale | Customer onboarding and retention |
| Management consultant | Advice and strategy | Project based | Recommendations, rarely production code |
A practical test
When reading a job post, ask: does this person own what runs in production? If not, it is closer to a solutions role, whatever the title says. At some companies the two titles are the same job, so read the responsibilities, not the label.
Skills you need to become a forward deployed engineer
Job posts and guides agree on two halves: engineering that works, and delivery that the customer trusts.
Engineering half
- Python, plus one of TypeScript, Java or Go
- SQL and data pipelines
- REST and GraphQL APIs, integrations (CRM, ERP, ticketing, identity)
- Cloud, Docker, CI/CD, observability
- LLM apps: prompting, RAG, agents, tool calling, MCP
- Evals and tracing (for example LangSmith, Arize Phoenix, Langfuse), guardrails, human-in-the-loop
Delivery half
- Customer discovery and problem scoping
- Translating business needs into technical plans
- Live demos and clear written updates for non-engineers
- Handling shifting requirements and undocumented systems
- Security reviews, compliance and change management
- Domain depth in one vertical such as finance, health or logistics
Forward deployed engineer salary in India
There is no authoritative India salary survey for this title yet, and the numbers disagree. Here is what each source says and how much to trust it.
| Source | Figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Glassdoor India (about 26 submissions, July 2026) | Median about ₹12.9 lakh; typical ₹9.5 to ₹17.9 lakh; 90th percentile about ₹34 lakh | Small, self-reported sample |
| Glassdoor India via InterviewBit (about 44 submissions, October 2026) | About ₹14.2 lakh average | Small sample, secondhand |
| Salary.com (April 2025 data) | Median about ₹14.1 lakh; Kochi estimate about ₹13.0 lakh | Modelled, not local postings |
| TeamLease Digital, quoted by Inc42 (May 2026) | Entry ₹9 to ₹12 lakh; mid-level ₹25 to ₹40 lakh | Staffing industry view |
| Training vendors (Scaler, AnalytixLabs) | 0 to 2 years ₹8 to ₹28 lakh; 3 to 6 years ₹15 to ₹55 lakh | Estimates from sellers of courses, treat as upper bounds |
What this means
A realistic early-career range is roughly ₹9 to ₹18 lakh, and experienced FDEs at global capability centres and US product companies can earn several times that. Employer type moves pay more than the title does. For comparison, OpenAI's San Francisco FDE posting lists $185,000 to $300,000 plus equity.
Who hires forward deployed engineers
Globally
Palantir is the originator and still the biggest source of roles: one snapshot of live postings found 77 of its 310 open roles were forward deployed. The same kind of count found 94 of Databricks' 870 open roles in the category, and one analysis of 292 open FDE jobs found Palantir, Databricks and OpenAI accounting for 250 of them.
Anthropic, Scale AI, Cohere, Mistral, Google Cloud, AWS and Salesforce also appear repeatedly in hiring roundups. These counts are snapshots from third-party analyses.
In India
IT services
TCS has said it wants 1% to 1.5% of its workforce, roughly 5,900 to 8,900 people, in FDE roles, by hiring or reskilling. Infosys plans about 6,000 FDE hires over the next few years. HCLTech is reported to be training recent graduates for such roles.
Product and AI companies
SaaS and AI firms with Bengaluru and Hyderabad teams, plus US-based AI labs hiring remotely.
Global capability centres
Google Cloud, for example, hires customer engineers and delivery-focused engineers in Bengaluru who do FDE-shaped work under other titles.
Many Indian employers use other titles for the same work: Solutions Engineer, Deployment Engineer, Implementation Engineer, Applied AI Engineer, Customer Engineer. Search all of them, not just "forward deployed engineer". The India hiring targets above come from executive statements, so they are plans, not confirmed headcount.
If you live in Kerala
Most of these roles sit in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and remote teams, so you do not need to relocate to start building the skills or applying.
How to become a forward deployed engineer
- Build the engineering base. Python and one more language, SQL, REST APIs, Git, Docker and a cloud platform.
- Learn the AI deployment stack. Call LLM APIs, build RAG and a simple agent, then add evals, logging and guardrails. This is the part most tutorials skip.
- Ship one production-like project. Pick a real workflow, deploy it, measure it, and write up the architecture, the evaluation results and the running cost. Evidence beats certificates.
- Practise customer skills. Run a discovery call with a small business, give a demo, write a clear status update for a non-technical reader.
- Pick a domain. AI labs often hire FDEs by vertical, so depth in finance, healthcare, logistics or government helps.
- Apply across the title family. Target implementation, deployment or solutions engineer roles first if you have under three years of experience.
Portfolio ideas that look like real FDE work
An enterprise policy-document RAG assistant with an evaluation suite that catches regressions.
A support-ticket triage agent wired to a ticketing API, with resolution metrics.
A pipeline that ingests messy CSVs, validates the schema and loads a warehouse.
An agent that takes actions in a domain you know, with a write-up of how it fails and where control returns to deterministic code.
Use messy data, deploy it somewhere real, and document what broke.
What the forward deployed engineer interview looks like
Formats differ by company. Candidate reports for Palantir describe phone screens with a coding exercise or a data case, followed by an on-site day with several technical interviews, a system design round, open-ended problem-solving prompts and behavioural questions. Guides for experienced candidates say interviewers test whether you can own an engagement end to end: scope an ambiguous problem, handle changing requirements, work in an environment with no documentation, and keep the client's trust.
Practise decomposition
Take a vague business problem and turn it into data, systems and a first deliverable out loud.
Prepare real stories
Two or three examples of shifting requirements, a failed deployment and a disagreement with a customer.
Bring a deployed project
Know its architecture, its failure modes and its running cost.
Learn the product
FDE interviews often probe how well you understand what you would be deploying.
These notes come from anonymous candidate reports and career guides, so treat them as typical patterns, not a guarantee.
Is forward deployed engineer a good career? The honest trade-offs
Upside
- High demand and strong pay at AI labs and product companies
- Direct customer impact and fast learning across many systems
- Paths into solutions architecture, customer engineering, product or founding a startup
Downside
- Travel, quoted from about 20% to 60% depending on the employer
- Long hours during deployments; one Palantir thread on Blind mentions 50 to 60 hours a week
- Breadth over depth: less time on a single codebase
- Risk of custom-work traps and drift into sales support
Who tends to thrive: people who enjoy ambiguity, can explain technical choices to non-engineers, ship quickly without gold-plating and stay calm when a customer system breaks. Who may not: engineers who want deep, uninterrupted work on one codebase or a predictable schedule.
Quick self-check: is an FDE role your kind of job?
Tick what is true for you. This is a rough reflection tool, not a test.
0 of 6 Tick the statements that fit you.
Before accepting an FDE offer, ask for the travel percentage, typical weekly hours, how many customers you will own and whether you will touch production.
Do you need a forward deployed engineer course?
Not strictly. One comparison of Indian programmes concludes that employers do not require any of these credentials, and the Indian options run from about ₹10,000 to about ₹4 lakh as of October 2026, from 30-hour certificates to 12-month programmes. If you choose one, check six things:
- Do you ship projects against a realistic client brief, not only watch lectures?
- Are evals, observability, security and deployment taught, not just prompting?
- Does a human review your work?
- Are there live hours, deadlines and a final demo?
- Are placement claims backed by an audited report?
- Is the fee and start date current? Several providers' pages disagree with their own comparison listings.
BlackBox Learning's GEN Stack program in Thiruvananthapuram is a strong base for exactly this path. It teaches the technical foundation FDE job posts ask for: Python, backend development, LLM and AI APIs, RAG, agents and MCP, built through hands-on projects, and forward deployed engineer is one of the roles it prepares you for. Add customer-facing and deployment practice on top (discovery calls, demos, one project deployed for a real user) and you have the full FDE profile.

Forward deployed engineer FAQ
What does FDE stand for?
FDE is short for forward deployed engineer, also written forward deployed software engineer (FDSE). The name borrows from military language for personnel stationed near the front line.
What is an AI forward deployed engineer?
It is an FDE who deploys AI systems, such as LLM applications, retrieval (RAG) pipelines and agents, into a customer's workflows and keeps them reliable with evaluation, guardrails and monitoring. Most FDE postings since 2025 are of this kind.
Is a forward deployed engineer a software engineer?
Yes. An FDE writes production code, but for one customer's environment instead of one product for all customers. Most employers expect real engineering, plus the ability to talk to the customer's business and technical teams.
What is the difference between a forward deployed engineer and a solutions engineer?
A solutions engineer mostly works before the sale, proving that the product can fit the customer. An FDE usually works after the sale and is accountable for the system running in the customer's production environment. Some companies use the two titles for the same job, so read the job description, not the title.
What is a forward deployed engineer salary in India?
Public data is thin and inconsistent. Glassdoor India shows a median of about ₹12.9 lakh a year from roughly 26 submissions (July 2026), and Salary.com shows about ₹14.1 lakh. Training vendors quote ₹18 to ₹55 lakh for 0 to 6 years of experience, but those are estimates, not survey results. Employer type matters more than the title: global capability centres and US product companies pay at the top, domestic IT services firms at the bottom.
Do forward deployed engineers write code?
Yes. Sources describing the role put roughly three quarters of the time into technical work such as integrations, data pipelines, LLM and RAG systems, and deployment. The rest goes to scoping, customer communication and feeding lessons back to the product team.
Can freshers get forward deployed engineer jobs?
It is hard to start as one. Most FDE job posts ask for 3 to 8 years of experience. Freshers usually enter through adjacent roles such as implementation engineer, deployment engineer, solutions engineer or backend developer, and move across after shipping real production work.
Is forward deployed engineer a good career?
It suits people who like ambiguity, customer contact and fast delivery. It is well paid at AI labs and product companies and demand is rising, but it can involve travel, long hours during deployments and less depth in one codebase. Andreessen Horowitz has called the title "title arbitrage" for older solutions and integration roles, so check what the actual job involves.
Is a degree necessary for forward deployed engineer jobs?
There is no single required path. Employers look for proof that you can build and ship: deployed projects, solid Python or TypeScript, SQL, APIs, cloud basics and clear communication. A degree helps with screening at some firms but is not the deciding factor in most guides.
What is the forward deployed engineer interview like?
It varies by company. Palantir candidate reports describe coding or data-case phone screens and an on-site day with technical, system design, problem-solving and behavioural rounds. Expect to be tested on scoping ambiguous problems, handling changing requirements and communicating with customers, not only on coding.
Is there a forward deployed engineer course in Kerala?
We found no Kerala or Kochi based course marketed specifically as forward deployed engineering as of October 2026. The FDE-branded programmes that exist are online, so learners in Kerala can join them remotely. For an in-person route in Kerala, BlackBox Learning's GEN Stack program in Thiruvananthapuram is a strong base for the engineering side of the role.
Which BlackBox Learning program prepares you to become a forward deployed engineer?
The GEN Stack program at BlackBox Learning in Thiruvananthapuram is a strong base for becoming a forward deployed engineer. It teaches Python and backend development, LLMs and AI APIs, RAG, agents and MCP through hands-on projects, which is the engineering half of what FDE job posts ask for, and forward deployed engineer is one of the career paths it prepares you for. Add customer-facing practice such as discovery calls, demos and a deployed project, and you have the full FDE profile.
Is a forward deployed engineer role remote or onsite?
It varies by company and by deployment phase. Some FDEs sit at the customer site, some work remotely with scheduled visits. Travel is quoted anywhere from about 20% to 60% of the time depending on the employer.
